Student Learning Outcomes

We desire that students who have completed CH 201 be able to:

1) write a short essay containing a thesis and support it by evidence from an assigned reading;

2) identify the practices and ideas that characterize a culture and differentiate one culture from another;

3) produce a written comparison between two assigned readings or cultural practices;

4) participate effectively in oral discussions of writings and other cultural materials, making well-supported claims about ideas, issues, and problems;

5) read ancient and medieval writings (in translation) and identify their arguments and cultural contexts;

6) recognize and analyze historical precedents for contemporary ideas and practices;

7) recall some of the values, distinctive practices, and achievements in the arts and sciences of the cultures studied.
