1. What is the purpose of the Nisus and Euryalus episode in Bk. 9?

2. Why is the death of Pallas so important to Aeneas? What impact does his death have on the later action of the poem?

3. How does the poet's presentation of Camilla differ from his presentation of other women in the poem? What makes her unique?

4. Given the presentation of the horrors that war holds for the inhabitants of a city in Bk. 2, what are we to make of the Trojans' assault against the Latin city in Bk. 12? How would you describe the position of the Aeneid on war? Does it challenge war and violence, or simply present it as an unfortunate aspect of life?
