What is ODE?
ODE is Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international economics honor society. It has 535 chapters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Australia, Canada, Egypt, France, Mexico, Scotland, and South Africa. ODE was formed in 1963 from the merging of two other honor societies, Omicron Delta Gamma and Omicron Chi Epsilon. Omicron Delta Gamma was originally founded at the University of Wisconsin in 1915. Omicron Chi Epsilon was founded at the City College of New York in 1955.In its constitution, four objectives are listed:
1. To confer distinction for high scholastic achievement in economics;
2. To stimulate and promote student interest in all aspects of economics;
3. To publish an official journal to be entitled The American Economist;
4. To sponsor the Fisher-Taussig Award competitions;We are the Alpha Chapter of Nevada. We see as our chapter objectives the first two items on the above list, to confer distinction with admission to the international honor society, and to stimulate interest with a more informal economics club. (We leave the journal and the awards to the international organization.) Thus, we call ourselves EC/ODE (pronounced E-Code), the Economics Club / Omicron Delta Epsilon.
We sponsor speakers on a variety of topics related to economics careers and the application of economics. We also provide a forum for students interested in economics to get to know each other, and to get to know economics faculty in a more relaxed setting than the classroom or office. In the future, we plan to establish a network for students interested in internships or related projects.
While membership in the Economics Club does not require it, we highly recommend that you consider joining the international economics honor society. Membership in the international honor society requires at least a "B" average overall, a minimum of 12 semester hours completed in economics (not including statistics) in either UNR's Economics Department or the Department of Applied Economics and Statistics with at least a 3.0 grade point average, a faculty recommendation (which may be sent by e-mail to the faculty advisor), and payment of a $35 initiation fee ($30 of which goes to international chapter headquarters, and $5 of which is your first-year dues to the Economics Club). With initiation, you receive a lifetime membership in Omicron Delta Epsilon, a one-year subscription to The American Economist, and the recognition that comes with outstanding achievement in economics.
You do not have to be an economics major to join either the club or the honor society, but you must have a genuine interest in economics. Applications can be obtained through the faculty advisor.
