Water
Treatment The
annual Water Treatment From Your Kitchen competition was
organized to provide a competition for students interested in
Environmental Engineering. The rules limit teams to use items
that are common around the house to clean the water. Each year
the rules are slightly changed and different pollutants are
used. Common items are anchovies, causing odor, beets, adding
color, and oil, a difficult liquid to filter. The teams are
judged on the final water quality, as well as the speed of the
water treatment and the amount of recovered water. Last year the
UNR ASCE Student Chapter won the competition. This year we will
be hosting the competition. If you are interested in either
being a team member or helping to organize this years
competition come to any one of our several meetings this
semester.

Concrete Canoe The
objectives of the national competition are: to challenge civil
engineering students to apply engineering principles in
designing and racing a concrete canoe; to reinforce the ASCE
Student Chapter Program; to aid in the professional development
of young civil engineers; To build camaraderie among ASCE
Student Chapters, educators and practitioners; To build
awareness of concrete technology, application and innovation. In
the National Competition, seventy percent of the teams score is
based on engineering design and construction principles used,
report presentation and oratory skills. The remainder of the
score is based on the performance of the canoe and the paddlers
in five different race events: Men's Distance, Women's Distance,
Men's Sprint, Women's Sprint, and Co-Ed Sprint. If you are
interested in joining this years team come to any one of our
several meetings this semester.

Steel Bridge
The Steel Bridge is an annual intercollegiate competition
sponsored by both the ASCE and the AISC. The competition is an
invaluable experience for students. Students work together on a
team to implement their knowledge gained in the classroom into a
design that is tested at the competition. Students deal with
real life issues including constructibility and weight while
trying to not comprise structural integrity. In the past the
University of Nevada, Reno ASCE Student Chapter has captured the
National Championship title, a feat we hope to repeat this year.
This year the student chapter will work to send another
competitive team to the National Championships. Anyone
interested in joining this years team needs to come to any one
of our several chapter meetings this semester. Engineering
students of all levels are needed for this team, form freshmen
to seniors this is a fun competition for everyone involved.
